North Carolina Man Admits To Executing $650,000 in Unauthorized Bank Transactions Using Stolen Identities

Federal prosecutors say a North Carolina man participated in a bank fraud conspiracy that relied on stolen identities, carrying out more than $650,000 in unauthorized transactions.

Jacob Lawson, 33, of Reidsville, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay $656,781.46 in restitution, says the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina.

His co-conspirator, Cordara Mattox, 39, of Stallings, received a 30-month prison term, five years of supervised release, and the same restitution amount in an earlier proceeding.

Both defendants admitted guilt to conspiracy to commit bank fraud, while Mattox additionally admitted guilt to aggravated identity theft and aiding and abetting.

Court records show the scheme ran from July 2021 through April 2025 and targeted at least 10 victims whose personal and banking details were obtained for use in the fraud.

Mattox contacted financial institutions while posing as the victims to order replacement debit and credit cards that were then used for retail purchases exceeding $650,000.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service conducted the investigation, which was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric A. Frick.
