Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) wants to become the Bitcoin bank of the world. Michael Saylor repeated that goal on November 6.

On the same day, an on-chain researcher showed that Bitcoin’s full blockchain still fits on a single 1TB drive. That lets ordinary users check the network themselves, without any bank.

MicroStrategy Pitches a Bitcoin Bank at Money20/20

Strategy CEO Phong Le laid out the plan at the Money20/20 fintech conference. There, he discussed Bitcoin as digital capital, the company’s STRC preferred stock and the merging of traditional and decentralized finance.

According to Le, Strategy has grown from an enterprise software firm into a holder of 845,000 BTC.

I joined @teresagoody at @Money2020 to discuss Bitcoin as Digital Capital, $STRC, the convergence of TradFi and DeFi, and Strategy’s vision to become the Bitcoin bank of the world.

Saylor shared Le’s interview on X shortly after.

The world needs a Bitcoin bank. We’re building it.

The idea is not new. In September, Saylor already urged banks to hold and lend against Bitcoin.

The Blockchain Still Fits on a Single Drive, for Now

That day, an on-chain researcher posted the blockchain’s size by year. It grew from 0.3 GB in 2011 to 780 GB in 2026. As a result, anyone with a 1TB drive can still run a full node, the core of Bitcoin’s be-your-own-bank promise.

2011: 0.3 GB
2012: 3.6 GB

2016: 95 GB
2017: 149 GB

Bitcoin Knots developer Luke Dashjr replied that “16 GB/year is the cap for now.” The researcher disagreed. Between July and September 2026, the chain grew by roughly 85 GB a year, the researcher wrote.

“Even the old 1 MB limit gave ~52 GB/year, so 16 GB/yr isn’t a cap on anything,” the post added.

Dashjr has long pushed for smaller blocks so home users can keep running nodes. In September, the developer told a supporter of his fork to get a real computer after the man’s Raspberry Pi had to resync.

Another user even suggested purging all chain history before 2020.

Meanwhile, Strategy keeps building its Bitcoin bank on the financial side, where its 12% dividend stock has rebounded from its June low.

Still, the fight over chain data shows that many users want to keep their own bank. Earlier this year, the same dispute led Knots supporters to claim the network was under attack.
