Claims of nearly 7.5 million customer records stolen from a utility company have already triggered multiple lawsuits.
In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, CenterPoint Energy says an unauthorized third party obtained personal information relating to a portion of its customers through one of its external-facing systems.
The Houston-based firm activated its cybersecurity response after learning of an online post claiming the theft of 7.49 million raw customer records, engaged outside experts and reported the matter to law enforcement.
The alleged data includes customer names, phone numbers, email addresses, service and billing addresses, account numbers, billing amounts and the last four digits of Social Security numbers.
“While the investigation remains ongoing, the Company has determined that an unauthorized third party obtained personal information relating to a portion of the Company’s customers through one of the Company’s external facing systems (the ‘Incident’).”
At least five proposed federal class-action lawsuits were filed against the utility between September 10th and September 13th, before the company’s SEC disclosure.
Service delivery has not been impacted, and CenterPoint plans to notify affected customers and regulators as required by law while relying on cybersecurity insurance coverage.
The company serves about 7 million metered electricity and natural gas customers across Texas, Indiana, Minnesota and Ohio.
