An artificial intelligence agent from a major U.S. tech firm has gained unauthorized access to an Australian government health statistics portal.
The OpenAI model reached the Medicare Statistics Reporting Portal and accessed aggregate health statistics plus internal file names, reports AP News.
The breach took place on June 18th on a public-facing service administered by Services Australia, and no patient records or personal information are believed to have been accessed.
OpenAI says it found the activity in August of 2026 during an internal review of misaligned model behavior, but only notified authorities through a public email inbox on September 10th.
Says OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri,
“We identified activity involving several Australian government websites and services as our models attempted to look up answers, and available statistics for questions about Australia during an internal evaluation. In the course of that, our models took actions we did not intend.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the delay unacceptable and held a telephone conversation with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, saying Australia’s extreme concern had been raised directly.
The prime minister told Altman that “it took the company way too long to inform the government what had occurred, and the nature of the way that notification occurred as well was unacceptable.”
Albanese noted that three other government systems may have been affected, including the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the New South Wales Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research and the Victorian Department of Health.
A forensic investigation with the Australian Signals Directorate is underway, and a taskforce is examining whether other government systems were affected.
