A cybercrime group is threatening to sell sensitive customer information stolen from Revolut unless the company pays a multimillion-dollar ransom in cryptocurrency.
The group calling itself iamnotavillain has posted an online ultimatum demanding 6,000 Monero (XMR), or about $3 million, reports Traders Union.
At least 680 customer accounts are affected, with the stolen material said to include passports, driver’s licenses, identity pictures used for know-your-customer checks and transaction histories.
As first reported by the Financial Times, the hackers say they obtained the files by compromising an Italian government email system and then posing as law enforcement over several months to request information on specific accounts.
They selected targets through blockchain analysis to identify Revolut accounts with significant crypto holdings.
A 60-second screen-capture video sent to the Financial Times appears to show access to purported Revolut documents matching those categories of customer records.
Revolut declines to comment on the purported ransom demand.
The bank says it is providing affected customers with immediate support and working closely with relevant law enforcement and regulatory authorities.
No negotiations have been reported yet, and the group warns the data will be sold to other criminal groups if payment is not made.
Revolut serves 80 million customers in more than 30 countries and recently reached a $115 billion valuation in a secondary share sale.
