A major health-tech firm has exposed the personal and medical data of nearly 20 million people after a hacker broke into outdated hospital servers.

Oracle Health, which runs systems formerly operated by Cerner, confirmed that an unauthorized person reached two legacy Cerner servers that had not yet moved to Oracle Cloud, reports HIPAA Journal.

Cerner is a major health information technology company and electronic health record (EHR) platform used by more than 27,000 healthcare facilities across over 35 countries. Oracle acquired Cerner in 2022 in a $28.4 billion mega deal and merged the firm into Oracle Health.

State filings place the intrusion in a window from January 22nd, 2025, to April 1st, 2025.

Oracle Health says it became aware of the breach on or around March 7th, 2025.

The Texas Attorney General reveals 2,992,244 Texans are affected, with Oregon listing 1,978,661, South Carolina 283,903 and Washington 69,238.

Bloomberg puts the nationwide figure near 20 million patients, impacting as many as 80 hospitals.

Stolen data reportedly includes names, Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, diagnoses, medications, test results, medical images and physician names.

A hacker demanded ransom to keep the files from being published.

Oracle Health has said its current systems and Oracle Cloud infrastructure were not hit.

Says Oracle Health,

“We are writing to inform you that, on or around February 20, 2025, we became aware of a cybersecurity event involving unauthorized access to some amount of your Cerner data that was on an old legacy server not yet migrated to the Oracle Cloud.”
