Federal prosecutors have arrested a Nigerian national accused of casting ballots in U.S. elections without ever becoming a citizen.
Gladys Adaeze Okafor, 56, of Lynn was taken into custody on September 16, 2026, and charged with unlawfully voting as an illegal immigrant, says the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.
Born in Aba, Nigeria, she gained lawful permanent resident status in December 2022 but never sought citizenship.
Prosecutors allege she signed a July 2022 voter registration card certifying U.S. citizenship under penalty of perjury.
The City of Lynn registered her, and she allegedly voted in the fall midterms.
Authorities further allege she filed a second registration in October 2023, again claiming citizenship, and voted in the 2024 presidential primary.
The offense carries up to one year in prison, one year of supervised release, a $100,000 fine, and possible deportation.
U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley announced the arrest with Homeland Security Investigations officials in New England.
The office formed a Benefit & Voter Fraud Team on March 26, 2026, after uncovering widespread fraud across Massachusetts.
A National Fraud Enforcement Division followed in April under President Trump’s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, chaired by Vice President J.D. Vance.
Charging documents contain allegations, and Okafor is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
