Hackers have stolen the personal and health information of hundreds of thousands of patients from a California company that makes wearable heart monitors.

iRhythm Technologies says unauthorized individuals accessed and downloaded data from certain third-party-hosted business applications between June 3rd and June 8th.

State filings show 298,647 people are impacted in Texas and another 69,526 in South Carolina, while the company has not disclosed a nationwide total.

The stolen records include patient names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, iRhythm account numbers, device serial numbers, insurance numbers and dates of service.

In a June filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company says the data was taken through social engineering and that a threat actor contacted it on June 9th claiming to hold patient health information and proprietary data.

Says the filing,

“The communications from the threat actor demanded payment in exchange for not publicly disclosing this information.”

iRhythm began notifying impacted patients on October 2nd.

Says iRhythm,

“iRhythm has no evidence that any personal information has been or will be used to commit identity theft.”

The firm says its medical devices, clinical systems and patient safety were not affected, and it does not store payment card or financial account information.

iRhythm makes the Zio patch, a wearable sensor used for long-term heart rhythm monitoring.
