Banks and other lenders are taking back far more American homes than they were a year ago.

Lenders completed foreclosures on 5,794 US properties in August, a 42% jump from August of 2025 and a 22% rise from July, says real estate data firm ATTOM.

Texas accounted for 1,835 of those repossessions, more than three times the 589 recorded in California.

North Carolina, Arizona and Alabama followed with 356, 296 and 286 completed foreclosures respectively.

Houston saw more bank repossessions than any other major metro area with 448, followed by Dallas with 402 and San Antonio with 256.

In total, 40,277 properties nationwide received a foreclosure filing in August, including default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions.

That figure is up 13% from a year earlier.

Lenders started the foreclosure process on 25,894 homes during the month, 7% more than a year ago.

South Carolina posted the worst foreclosure rate in the country, with one filing for every 1,547 housing units, followed by Nevada and Florida.

Says ATTOM chief executive Rob Barber,

“August’s data shows that foreclosure activity continues to trend above year-ago levels, particularly in completed foreclosures, which saw a notable annual increase. While some homeowners are still facing financial challenges, overall foreclosure volumes remain well below historical norms and the broader housing market continues to demonstrate resilience.”

ATTOM says overall foreclosure activity is still below pre-pandemic levels.
