Apple has reached a $250 million settlement to resolve allegations that it overstated the availability of AI capabilities on certain iPhone models, but consumers may have to wait until 2027 before receiving any money.
The agreement, reached in May 2026, stems from a lawsuit accusing Apple of misleading customers about AI features advertised for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 lineups, reports USA Today.
Plaintiffs for the case accuse Apple of deceiving “millions of consumers into spending hundreds of dollars on a phone they did not need, based on features that do not exist.”
Apple has rejected the allegations in court filings, arguing that it has already introduced more than 20 Apple Intelligence capabilities. The company also said additional AI-powered Siri features are expected to arrive through future software updates.
The proposed settlement covers consumers who purchased certain iPhone models between June 10th, 2024 and March 29th, 2025. Eligible devices include the iPhone 16, 16e, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.
If the settlement receives final approval, eligible consumers could receive at least $25 per qualifying device. Depending on the number of approved claims, payments could rise to as much as $95 per device.
The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California granted preliminary approval to the deal in July 2026.
A final approval hearing is scheduled for September 29th, 2027.
Payments would not be distributed until the court grants final approval and any appeals or related proceedings are resolved.
