Tens of thousands of Michigan children have reportedly lost federal food assistance as households scramble for other support.
More than 167,000 residents statewide, including over 53,000 kids, no longer qualify for SNAP benefits, reports Michigan Advance.
Food pantries are already seeing the strain, with Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes logging a 56% jump in people seeking help compared with last year.
School meal programs could feel pressure too, because SNAP participation helps drive federal dollars some districts use to feed students.
Montague Area Public Schools Superintendent Jeffrey Johnson says federal sources currently cover about 70% of his district’s meal costs while the state covers the rest.
Beginning October 1st, Michigan is also set to take on a larger share of SNAP administrative expenses, about $95 million more each year.
