Illinois Woman Accused of Hiding Dead Mother in Garage Freezer for Two Years To Steal Social Security Benefits

Federal prosecutors have charged 17 defendants with stealing more than $1,340,000 in Social Security benefits during a one-month enforcement surge.

The Justice Department’s National Fraud Enforcement Division, working with 11 U.S. Attorney’s Offices and the Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General, brought the cases between August 21st and September 18th of 2026, says the Department of Justice.

Prosecutors say the defendants caused more than $1,340,000 in intended losses across retirement, disability and Supplemental Security Income programs.

One Illinois case alleges that Eva Bratcher concealed her mother’s body in a garage freezer for two years while collecting the deceased woman’s Social Security and SNAP benefits, and also used an alternate Social Security number to take more food aid.

In New York, prosecutors say David Darling withdrew $109,746 using his deceased brother’s ATM card after Social Security kept depositing benefits into the account.

Says Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald,

“The Social Security Administration’s benefits programs are meant to safeguard America’s elderly and most vulnerable — not to bankroll fraudsters.

Every dollar stolen is a dollar taken from a retiree’s medicine, meals, or housing.”

Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano said the Trump administration is working with the Justice Department to root out benefit fraud and protect taxpayer dollars.
