Most Americans don’t expect to ever see the $5,000 payment the president is promising if Republicans keep control of Congress in next month’s midterms.
A new NBC News Decision Desk poll conducted with SurveyMonkey finds 71% of respondents think they won’t get the money.
That includes 42% who say they “definitely” won’t receive the check and 29% who say they “probably” won’t.
Only 14% say they expect to get paid.
President Trump floated the idea at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas, pledging to give every American adult $5,000 if the GOP holds both the House and the Senate.
Experts say the payments would cost an estimated $1.2 trillion and would need approval from Congress.
Trump has previously floated tariff dividend checks and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) stimulus checks that never arrived.
The same poll finds that 71% of adults think the country is on the “wrong track,” the highest share of Trump’s second term.
Trump’s approval rating has also fallen to 34% among US adults, a second-term low in NBC polling.
The poll surveyed 19,135 adults from September 28th to October 12th and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
