Why Are AMD And Intel Stock Prices Down Today?

Wall Street's Record Bullishness Could Trigger a Summer Stock Crash
Source: Business Insider

AMD and Intel’s latest downtrend is due to a global semiconductor sell off pattern. The semiconductor industry faced substantial hurdles on a global scale on August 19, with South Korea’s KOSPI index falling 5.8%, erasing nearly $235 billion from the market. Leading the crash was SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, falling 9.75% and 7.82%, respectively. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics are two of the largest AI memory chip manufacturers. When these two stocks dip, the semiconductor sector in general tends to take a hit. AMD and Intel’s stock price dip is likely a consequence of the global trend.

The tech stock dip also comes amid a surge in the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin (BTC) reclaimed the $70,000 price level earlier today after months of struggle. It is possible that some of AMD and Intel’s liquidity has moved to the cryptocurrency market. The cryptocurrency sector saw rejuvenated interest after President Trump revealed that the US may buy a substantial amount of Bitcoin (BTC) and other cryptocurrencies.

While AMD and Intel may be suffering due to the global semiconductor sell off, both stocks are likely to rebound very soon. Wall Street analysts are also quite bullish on the chip manufacturing sector, especially given the ongoing AI boom. Additionally, AMD’s Helios chip sales are expected to drive growth and revenue for the company which may be reflected by the fourth quarter of this year. We could stock price rebound before that.
