The 95-year-old legendary investor Warren Buffett had previously revealed to a Trust that he wants 90% of the money his wife inherits after his death to be invested in just one fund. The founder of Berkshire Hathaway has seen an overall gain of 6,099,294% (six million percent) from 1964 to 2025. That’s an incredible stock market run, making him the richest investor to ever live. He has been in the market for more than six decades. Despite having enormous wealth, he invests in companies he knows what they do. He does not believe in extreme diversification, but consolidates into stocks he trusts.

Warren Buffett’s Will: Here’s Where 90% of His Wife’s Inheritance Will Go

In a letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders in 2013, Warren Buffett outlined his plan and directives in his will. He wrote in the will that the Trust will only give 10% of the cash inherited to his wife, and that it should be invested in short-term government bonds. However, he wrote that the remaining 90% of the amount should be invested in only one fund, which is a low-cost S&P 500 index.
“One bequest provides that cash will be delivered to a trustee for my wife’s benefit,” Warren Buffett wrote in the will. “My advice to the trustee could not be more simple: Put 10% of the cash in short-term government bonds and 90% in a very low-cost S&P 500 index fund.” The billionaire has been bullish on the S&P 500 index for years and strongly believes in its growth. He has urged investors to stay invested in the index for the long term, as the rewards can be life-changing.
The S&P 500 index was at 1,400 in 2013 when Warren Buffett made his will. It is now close to 7,700 in 2026 and has weathered all storms that have come its way. That’s a rise of nearly 450% since then, and it has still risen despite experiencing a decade’s worth of turmoil. The S&P 500 index could grow much bigger in the next 10 years, and reward traders with phenomenal gains. Staying invested for a minimum of 10 years is what can change one’s financial perspective.
Warren Buffett’s net worth currently stands at $140 billion in 2026. Roughly 99% of his fortune comes from the stock market and his investment acumen. He ranks among the top 15 wealthiest individuals globally and is extremely financially disciplined.
