BRICS Pushes Dollar Alternative With CBDCs, Pix and New Payment Rails

The BRICS dollar alternative is moving from talk to real infrastructure this year, as members connect digital currencies, link payment networks and draft a gold-backed settlement token to cut reliance on the dollar and SWIFT. BRICS CBDCs are being lined up for interconnection, UnionPay has been plugged into Brazil’s Pix, Argentina extended its currency swap with Beijing to 2031, and a new settlement token is on the desks of central bankers across the bloc.

BRICS CBDCs And Payment Rails Reshape The Dollar Alternative

The BRICS payment system keeps growing in pieces, not all at once. Instead of one shared currency, members are wiring together tools they already have. The European Central Bank’s June 2026 report said this points to a fragmenting monetary system, with more countries building out BRICS payment rails to move money outside dollar-based channels.

India Pushes To Connect BRICS Digital Currencies

On January 19, 2026, the Reserve Bank of India proposed linking the digital currencies of BRICS central banks at this year’s summit, which India is chairing. Nobody is planning a common currency here; the goal is to connect what exists, from India’s e-rupee to Brazil’s Drex, even though none of the founding states has a fully working digital currency yet and all five are still piloting theirs. An April 2026 study called interoperability, not a shared currency, the most realistic path for BRICS de-dollarization.

Momentum has also built through mBridge, run by the central banks of China, Hong Kong, Thailand and the UAE with the BIS Innovation Hub. It reached minimum viable product stage in 2026 and now settles cross-border CBDC payments in seconds instead of days.

Pix, Currency Swaps And A Gold-Backed Settlement Token

On August 4, 2026, UnionPay and the Chinese Consulate in Rio de Janeiro launched a pilot letting Chinese app users pay by QR code at merchants on Pix, Brazil’s instant payment network, which covers roughly 15 million merchants at no cost to individuals. UnionPay card transactions in Brazil rose more than 30% in the first half of 2026.

A day later, Argentina’s central bank extended its currency swap with the People’s Bank of China by five years, covering 130 billion yuan, about $19.1 billion, the longest renewal in the swap’s history.

Central banks are drafting a bigger piece of the BRICS payment rails right now, a blockchain-based settlement token that ties 40% of its value to gold and 60% to the currencies of the bloc’s core members. “A pilot has already been completed, and the draft framework has been prepared ahead of the next phase of implementation,” one official involved said. The token would not replace national currencies; it would bridge them, letting an Indian bank convert rupees into it and send it to a Brazilian counterpart, which converts it into reais without routing through dollars first.

What This Means For Global Payments

Central banks are planning a sandbox to test the token before wider use. “The focus is now on implementation architecture, sandbox testing and deployment arrangements,” a second official said, adding that talks should gather pace under India’s BRICS presidency. Regulatory coordination and pushback from countries that still rely on the current system remain the biggest hurdles to BRICS de-dollarization.

None of this adds up to a finished alternative yet. The BRICS dollar alternative is still separate projects moving the same direction, and the dollar still dominates reserves. But between interconnected CBDCs, a working Pix-UnionPay link, a longer Argentina-China swap and a gold-backed token in draft form, the BRICS payment system now carries more weight than it did a year ago.
