Nvidia (NVDA) has seen some of the biggest gains in finance history over the last few years. The chip manufacturer is the clear leader amid an ongoing AI boom. While many have positioned Advanced Micro Devices, Inc (AMD) as a competitor to Nvidia’s (NVDA) dominance, there is one other company than many overlook. Let’s discuss which company investors should consider when picking a competitor for Nvidia (NZDA).

Nvidia’s (NVDA) rise to the top of the tech stock food chain was fueled by its GPU (Graphics Processor Unit) capabilities. Generative AI models rely heavily on GPU power. No company has come close to rivaling Nvidia’s GPU design. Even Elon Musk said last month that SpaceX could build exclusively on Nvidia chips, stating that their hardware is the best in the market right now. However, custom AI chips could present substantial challenges to Nvidia’s model. One company that stands out is Broadcom (AVGO).

GPUs are the current go-to chips for AI workloads. However, GPUs are not the most efficient and costs can run high. This single point puts a lot of pressure on Nvidia. Custom AI hardware specifically built for workloads are needed to optimize computing costs. Broadcom could come in and dominate this market. The company has already onboarded major clients such as Alphabet, Meta Platforms, OpenAI, and Anthropic. Given its robust roster of clients, we could see more hyper scalers flock to Broadcom instead of Nvidia (NVDA).

Additionally, there has been a call from several researchers and policymakers to slowdown AI development. Such a move could lead to AI companies moving to more efficient and optimized hardware. Nvidia (NVDA) could see an outflow of users under such circumstances. Broadcom (AVGO) stock price could also reflect a similar sentiment if the company can cater to a more efficiency-centric market.
