Scammers Drain $56,000 From Massachusetts Woman After Masquerading as Bank Employees

A Massachusetts woman lost $56,000 after scammers allegedly posed as employees of her bank and convinced her to transfer her savings into a supposed “safe account.”

The 43-year-old Hingham resident told police that the scheme began around 6 p.m. when she received an unexpected call from someone claiming to work in her bank’s fraud department, according to Fall River Reporter.

The caller allegedly told the woman that someone had recently visited her bank branch and attempted to impersonate her to make a wire transfer.

Although the supposed transaction had been stopped, the caller claimed the woman’s account had been compromised and that she needed to move her money into a new account for protection.

The scammers told the woman they would contact her the following morning because the bank was already closed.

They called back around 9 a.m. and instructed her to visit her local branch and transfer her funds into a “new safe account.”

The caller allegedly remained on the phone while the woman went to the bank and completed a $56,000 wire transfer using account information provided by the scammer.

After the transfer went through, the caller allegedly told her that the money was secure and that the bank was conducting an investigation.

The woman later called the number again to make sure she had not fallen victim to a scam. The caller allegedly reassured her that the money was protected by the FDIC for up to $250,000.

She became suspicious several hours later and contacted her actual bank branch.

That’s when she learned that she had been defrauded.

Police are investigating the incident.
