The Wedge Looks Bearish, but Bitcoin’s Flows Are Improving
Bitcoin is approaching the 65,000 area inside a simple rising wedge. The pattern looks familiar, but the surrounding market evidence makes the bearish conclusion less obvious than the chart suggests.
The technical structure is compressing beneath overhead supply. At the same time, institutional flows have improved after an unstable second half of July.
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows of approximately $170.1 million on August 3 and $211.5 million on August 4. That followed several late-July sessions of heavy withdrawals, including outflows above $200 million on both July 23 and July 24.
The change in flows matters because ETF weakness had been one of the central arguments against a durable Bitcoin recovery. Citi reduced its Bitcoin outlook in July after ETF flows turned negative and broader investor adoption failed to provide a new catalyst.
Now the flows are improving, but price has not yet cleared resistance.
What the market expected
Two consecutive positive ETF sessions, combined with softer Treasury yields and a weaker dollar, should have made a clean move through 65,000 more credible.
Instead, Bitcoin is hesitating beneath the same area that rejected price at the end of July. The reaction suggests that the market is pricing a better macro environment without yet pricing a decisive return of conviction.
The latest recovery also appears to be externally led. Lower yields, weaker energy prices and improved risk sentiment supported Bitcoin, while the absence of a major crypto-specific catalyst limited the strength of the move.
What the chart shows
The hourly chart has produced higher lows, but the advance is narrowing between rising support and slower-moving resistance.
That creates a wedge, although the pattern remains unconfirmed while support holds.
The more important obstacle is the horizontal supply zone around 64,950–65,250. A brief move above the diagonal boundary would mean little without sustained acceptance above that area.
Primary interpretation
The wedge remains a warning rather than a confirmed reversal.
Its bearish interpretation would gain weight only after an hourly break below rising support, followed by a failed attempt to reclaim it. Until then, the structure continues to compress rather than reverse.
Alternative interpretation
The alternative is that positive ETF flows absorb the overhead supply and turn the apparent wedge into continuation.
That scenario becomes more credible if Bitcoin establishes hourly acceptance above 65,250. Such a move would invalidate the immediate pattern and suggest that the compression represented accumulation rather than exhaustion.
What would change the current view
A sustained break below rising support would strengthen the wedge thesis.
Acceptance above the resistance zone would cancel it. The broader structure would remain more stable while the 62,250–62,550 range base holds.
What comes next
The July U.S. employment report is scheduled for August 7. It will test whether the recent improvement in macro sentiment can survive a fresh change in rate expectations.
The wedge is simple, but the flow backdrop is not.
